How to apply for an ITIN?

An ITIN is an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number. An ITIN is generally required when an individual is required to file a Federal tax return, but they are not eligible for an SSN. Once you select that you don't have a taxpayer ID, the system will ask you if you want Sprintax to help you with an ITIN application. You can select 'Yes' in order to obtain the required documents for the ITIN application.

However, you cannot directly obtain an ITIN through Sprintax. The software will prepare the ITIN application for you (Form W-7) along with your Federal tax return. Please follow the instructions in the tax packs that Sprintax prepares for you.

The following steps are advised if students are applying for an ITIN alongside their tax return. When mailing ITIN application, please include:

  • 1040 NR (Your Federal tax return);
  • ITIN application (Form W-7 signed);
  • Attach a certified copy of the applicant’s passport.

If including a photocopy of your passport, it must be certified by one of the following*:

  • Certified Acceptance Agent or IRS official;
  • The governmental department that issued the identification document;
  • The United States Embassy or Consulate (make a reservation before visit).
