I didn’t earn income in the US, do I need to file a tax return?

Yes, even if you did not have US income, you would have to file Form 8843 if you were on a F,J,M or Q visa. 

Form 8843 is filed to report your days of presence in the US that should not be counted toward the Substantial Presence Test due to the exemption of your visa.
